Oakfield High School Band Syllabus
Welcome to another year in the Oakfield Band. I’m excited to share a year of music learning and performing with you as your skills continue to improve and you impress the community with our great sounds!
Performance Requirements:
There will be required performances throughout the year including but not limited to pep band performances, concerts, the Memorial Day ceremony, and graduation. Concert Black clothing will be worn for the school concerts and graduation ceremony. Uniform jackets and blue jeans will be worn for parade and pep-type performances. *A calendar is on the back of this page.
Lessons:
Students who participate in alternate-day band days will be required to participate in small group lessons. Lessons include graded skills and/or knowledge work. Students will receive instruction based on common skills as well as pep and concert music. Students in “small” band will have lesson-type work as well as additional assignments during the year. An optional lesson time will be scheduled for students who have band five days a week.
Course Evaluation and Grading:
Grades will be based on knowledge and performance of the music standards – create, respond, perform, and connect. Written and playing assignments will be given to assess the standards.
Students are expected to attend performances and turn work in on time. Missing performances or assignments will warrant a ZERO in the gradebook and may result in specific requests for Oakrichment and/or loss of privileges (including co-curricular athletics and activities) until learning items are complete.
Lettering System:
A point system is used to determine who earns a band award letter. Some points are given for required activities to acknowledge the extra time and effort that you devote to band. Points will accumulate throughout your high school career and are posted in the band room.
Additional Opportunities:
Jazz Band is an extra-curricular group composed of dedicated students. Jazz Band meets on Thursday mornings at 7:00 a.m. Students are eligible to earn a pin for letter jackets if attending the majority of rehearsals and performing in all concerts.
Solo and Ensemble Festival is organized to encourage individual growth through group or solo performances. I will be strongly encouraging students to work on one or some pieces of music for this opportunity. Our “band” event is scheduled on Saturday, March 15th in Oakfield! Please put this date on your calendar AND share it with any family who would be willing to volunteer – we will need lots of help for this event!
